On Oct. 8, the National Institutes of Health published a request for information (RFI) on “Opportunities to Reduce Administrative Burden in NIH Extramural Research.” NIH is seeking input from all individuals involved in extramural research, including researchers, research administrators, institutional officials and peer reviewers.
The four focus areas NIH is particularly interested in are:
-
- identification of “requirements or processes that could be simplified, eliminated, consolidated or moved to a later stage,”
- “opportunities to reduce duplication and improve consistency,”
- “opportunities to make better use of technology and existing information,” and
- pinpointing “requirements, guidance or systems that create unnecessary complexity or uncertainty.”
NIH is interested in both the assessment of individual agency requirements and opportunities to “redesign research administration processes more fundamentally.”
The university is collecting comments from all stakeholders in the research enterprise that have suggestions or ideas relevant to NIH’s request. These comments will be collated and inform the institutional response to the RFI. Anyone interested in submitting information for the university’s consideration can fill out this survey.
Individuals may respond to this RFI, but may not use university letterhead to do so and must clearly identify any stated views as their own.
