Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for the many ways that you contribute to our research enterprise. Every day, the work that we do makes a real difference for people all over our state and across the nation. The university is dedicated to supporting this work in ways that saves lives, creates opportunities and protects national security.

As you may be aware, new federal regulations were issued in April of this year that are designed to prevent individuals or entities located in, or affiliated with, countries of concern from accessing certain types of bulk sensitive personal data relating to individuals in the U.S. or U.S. persons generally. The current list of countries of concern includes China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Russia, Venezuela, Iran, Cuba and North Korea.

As part of the university’s compliance obligations, all Principal Investigators (PIs) and personnel on existing sponsored research projects, or those pending set up, must complete a new training module. The required training module, DOJ Bulk Data Regulations Training, which must be completed every three years, provides an overview of the regulations’ requirements. The training module is now available through the PEERRS training portal.

Additional guidance and information about these regulations is available on an updated FAQs page from the Office of General Counsel. If you have additional questions about this topic, please contact [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for your attention to this important compliance matter and for the incredible things that you do for our state and nation every day.

Sincerely,

Arthur Lupia
Vice President for Research and Innovation
