- Utilizing big data to identify strengths and areas of emerging expertise
- Efficiently and effectively producing data and visualizations to support the cyclical reporting needs of stakeholders
- Conducting rapid response analyses to address emerging needs and questions from stakeholders
Professor Owen-Smith received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Arizona.
He also is co-founder and executive director of the Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS), based at U-M, which collects administrative data from more than 30 colleges and universities nationwide in an effort to better understand, explain and improve the public value of research. IRIS then develops reports based on that data to help researchers, government agencies and policymakers interpret how university research supports and expands opportunities for businesses across the country.
