FY20 Federal Agency Reports

The federal government remains the largest sponsor of U-M research, and during FY20, agencies supported 54 percent of the university’s research volume. With $887 million in federally sponsored research over the last fiscal year, U-M researchers led projects that span Great Lakes sustainability and racial health disparities to the arts and humanities.


DoDDepartment of Defense

  • In FY20, U-M research expenditures under contract with the Department of Defense totaled $77 million. DoD partners with researchers across U-M to provide branches of the military with the necessary resources to ensure they are well-equipped to address complex challenges and threats facing our nation. DoTDepartment of Transportation

  • In FY20, U-M research expenditures under contract with the Department of Transportation totaled $6 million. NASANational Aeronautics and Space Administration

  • In FY20, U-M research expenditures under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration totaled $28 million. NASA partners with researchers across U-M to discover and expand knowledge for the benefit of humanity, while supporting innovation and technology development to advance our space exploration capabilities. NIHNational Institutes of Health

  • In FY20, U-M research expenditures under contract with the National Institutes of Health totaled $576 million. NIH partners with researchers across U-M to advance knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems, and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce illness and disability. NOAANational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

  • In FY20, U-M research expenditures under contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration totaled $11 million.
