Aligning how we work

PRIORITY 1: DEEPER DIVE

Shared expectations and practices so the time and expertise you bring translate into more impact, not more friction.

What this priority is about

When roles are clear and handoffs are smooth, discoveries move. When they aren’t, good people spend their best hours working around friction instead of on the research itself. Aligning how we work is about closing that gap. It means being deliberate about the shared expectations, decision-making practices and coordination habits that turn OVPR’s catalyzing, supporting and safeguarding into work that actually reaches faculty researchers and the public they serve.

This isn’t new work for most of us. It’s the work we already do when we document a process so the next person doesn’t have to relearn it, or when we pull in the right partner unit early instead of late. This priority just makes that visible, supported and shared across OVPR.

OUR WHY

To create a research enterprise where every person, process and policy is optimized to accelerate discoveries that are consistently translated into real-world outcomes.

What this looks like in practice

SHARED EXPECTATIONS

Consistent standards for how OVPR units collaborate, lead and operate so teams know what to expect of each other and of the work.

CLEAR ROLES AND DECISIONS

Who owns what, who decides what and how support flows. Less guessing, fewer conversations that have to happen twice.

CROSS-UNIT COLLABORATION

Intentional partnerships between units with complementary strengths, with shared goals and documented lessons learned.

MISSION-ALIGNED INVESTMENT

Funding decisions anchored in OVPR’s mission and impact so resources follow the work that turns discoveries into solutions.

What’s happening this installment

A few concrete efforts are already in motion. Each one is designed to make alignment easier in daily work rather than adding a new layer to it.

01

Surface what’s already working. Identify scalable practices from across OVPR units and make them easy for others to adopt.

02

Pilot cross-unit partnerships. Support 2–3 intentional pairings each year between units with complementary strengths, with shared goals and documented lessons.

03

Launch a culture and operations exchange series. Units showcase what’s working in workplace culture or operational practice and talk through how other units could adapt it.

04

Stand up communities of practice. For roles that span multiple units, such as project managers and administrative leads, regular touchpoints to share tools and surface common challenges.

05

Anchor funding decisions in mission. Clear criteria for OVPR-managed seed funding and strategic investments that prioritize collaboration, capacity-building and long-term research impact.

Where you come in

If you’re already doing one of these things informally, tell us. If you’re hitting a friction point that one of these efforts could fix, tell us that too. The fastest way to align is to learn from what teams are already figuring out.

  • A practice that’s working in your unit that others could use
  • A handoff that keeps breaking in the same spot
  • A partner unit you’d like to collaborate with
  • A role type in OVPR that doesn’t yet have a community of practice
  • A funding or process rule that slows mission-aligned work
  • A question you’d bring to a culture and operations exchange

NAME • SHARE • TEST • SHAPE

Pick one friction point or one working practice. Name it to your team this week. That’s how alignment starts.
