On June 18, the National Institutes of Health released NOT-OD-25-127 to inform the biomedical research community of the actions regarding the termination and suspension of funding for “dangerous gain-of-function research.” The NIH will notify affected investigators and institutions directly of actions initiated by NIH.
The U-M Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) will provide specific instructions in an email to IBC PIs on how to assess their research, and how potential notices to NIH will be handled.
If faculty believe their research may meet any of this criteria, they must fill out the U-M DURC-PEPP Self-assessment, or contact the IBC staff at [email protected], no later than Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The IBC staff will help to determine if their work meets this criteria.
Any determination that a project fits this criteria must be communicated to NIH no later than June 30, 2025. Faculty should not contact NIH directly. The IBC staff will work with the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) to make any required notifications.
