S. Jack Hu has served as vice president for research since January 2016. He also served as interim vice president for research from 2014-2015.
As vice president for research, Professor Hu is responsible for nurturing the excellence and integrity of research across the entire university, including research on the campuses of Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint. He also oversees the U-M Office of Research, which catalyzes, supports and safeguards U-M research.
During his tenure as vice president for research, Professor Hu has helped launch several important interdisciplinary initiatives, including Mcity, the Exercise and Sport Science Initiative and a major campus-wide initiative in data science.
Professor Hu has provided leadership in strengthening the culture of research compliance by working closely with the campus community, including reorganization of the campus-wide Animal Care and Use Program and improvements in research safety. He also made strategic organizational realignments in the Office of Research to ensure collaboration, inclusion, innovation and transparency.
Professor Hu's teaching and research interests include manufacturing systems design and operations, assembly modeling and statistical quality methods. He is the recipient of various awards, including the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, ASME William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award, SME/NAMRI Research Implementation Award, the College of Engineering Research Excellence Award and several best paper awards. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Manufacturing Systems from 2008 to 2013. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015, and was elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017.
