The Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI), a pioneering new institute in China, employs collaborative and innovative approaches to bring university technologies to market. Through a partnership established by the University of Michigan Office of Research, BICI has agreed to fund U-M research and translational research in a broad range of areas, including engineering, health, science and environmental technologies from sponsored research.
- Foster longterm and sustainable collaboration between U-M and BICI
- Create new intellectual property and advance promising discoveries for the marketplace
- Generate benefits for the U-M and BICI communities
- Inventions; patents; commercial partnerships; startup companies; and follow-on funding targeted toward these same outcomes.
Distinctive aspects of this program include the business assessment work that dovetails with technical milestones for each project. Technologies developed from these sponsored projects will have priority to be licensed by BICI for further development and commercialization in the global market. BICI has established a platform with industry to streamline the commercialization process.
Each year, there will be two Call for Proposal cycles to solicit research ideas. Each proposal will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee, and then the Oversight Committee will make decisions on projects to be funded based on criteria set in the Call for Proposals.
