What We Do
The opening of the University of Michigan Washington D.C. Office in January, 1990 established a permanent UM presence in Washington to function as a base to reach out to Congress and the federal government for support of the University’s teaching, research and service missions.
A primary goal of the UM Washington D.C. Office is to help the University provide national leadership in matters affecting higher education and research as well as help the University to accomplish its specific objectives. Office staff continually monitor federal legislation that impacts or involves higher education and research and work with federal officials and government agencies in providing and research findings that may assist their work.
The Washington Office’s approach to government relations has been one of service and outreach: establishing relationships on behalf of the University based on mutual respect and shared goals. Such relationships not only aid in forwarding the University’s priorities but also lay the groundwork for solving problems (institutional and individual) when they arise.
In addition to Washington D.C., UM Government Relations Staff also work in Lansing and Ann Arbor. For more information, visit the web site for the Office of Government Relations.
