U-M hosts week-long exploration of role of body in making art

In the latest incarnation of innovative arts exploration, the University of Michigan's Arts on Earth presents "Arts & Bodies," a week-long series of performances, talks and happenings that aim to provoke a rethinking of the vital connection among the arts, education and societal values. The series of programs begins Nov. 1. All events are free and open to the public. "With the many economic problems affecting people, we think it's timely to explore ways the arts can help us gain some perspective," said Theresa Reid, executive director of Arts on Earth, a university-wide initiative in creative work and learning directed by the deans of arts and engineering on U-M's North Campus. U-M exceeds $1 billion in annual research spending for the first time

Research spending at the University of Michigan in 2008-09 exceeded $1 billion for the first time, a milestone that highlights the university’s role as an economic resource benefitting the entire state. In the midst of the most severe recession since the Great Depression, research spending at the university rose 9.4 percent over the previous fiscal year, totaling $1.02 billion. The federal government provided 64.4 percent of the funds, and federal research spending at the U-M rose 7.1 percent over 2007-08. [Read more...]

Michigan High School Students Attend U-M Pre-Architecture Program, ArcStart

University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning recently hosted ArcStart, a pre-architecture program designed to introduce students to experience the studio intensity of a bachelor of science degree in architecture. Eighteen high-school students from Ann Arbor, Detroit, Canton, Grosse Pointe Park, Farmington Hills, Midland, Plymouth, Saline, Southfield, Troy and West Bloomfield, attended the residential program at U-M in Ann Arbor, Mich., from July 31, 2009, to Aug. 10, 2009. Taubman School Dean selected as National Design Awards juror, attends White House 10th anniversary event

U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Dean Monica Ponce de Leon was selected as one of nine jurors for the 2009 National Design Awards. First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the White House ceremony for the winners and finalists of the 2009 awards and served as honorary patron for the awards program held July 24, 2009. An award ceremony will take place at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in the fall. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the awards.[read more...]
