U-M’s VP for Research says private sector will share ex-Pfizer research site
The University of Michigan will look for private-sector partners to share space at its newly acquired former Pfizer property in Ann Arbor, and U-M's vice president of research Stephen Forrest outlined some of the criteria the university will use to evaluate potential joint ventures. At a speech to a meeting of the Urban Land Institute on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in Ann Arbor, Forrest said private collaborators should have: Research synergies with the university; Workforce needs that can be satisfied by the university; Interest in technologies developed at the university, and; Interest in facilities where collaborative work can flourish. UM professor recognized by Michigan Venture Capital Association
David Brophy, director of the Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity Finance at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, was honored Monday night with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual awards dinner of the Ann Arbor-based Michigan Venture Capital Association. In 1972, Brophy, who is also an associate professor of finance, founded the Michigan Growth Capital Symposium to help diversify the state’s economy away from its dependence on auto manufacturing. Zell Lurie Institute awards student entrepreneurs more than $50,000 in grants
The Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business has announced the recipients of the Fall 2009 Eugene Applebaum Dare to Dream Grant Program, where students apply for funding to advance their innovative, high-potential business concepts toward launch. The 30 grant recipients submitted projects that range from a light sport aircraft design and manufacturing firm to an online fundraising platform for performers to a stationary bicycle that generates electricity. $9.3 million grant to boost nanotech vaccine research
University of Michigan efforts to develop new nanoemulsion-based vaccines for a variety of diseases will move forward much more quickly thanks to a large federal award. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has awarded U-M a contract for $9,340,522 over five years for work to be conducted at the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences at U-M (MNIMBS) and Ann Arbor-based NanoBio Corporation, the institute’s research partner for the project. "This contract allows us to develop the process to apply our nanoemulsion technology to almost any form of antigen. We believe this will facilitate a number of new vaccines as well as improve existing vaccines," says James R. Baker Jr., director of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute, Ruth Dow Doan Professor of Internal Medicine, and founder and CEO of NanoBio Corporation, in which he holds a financial interest. Michigan Venture Center will build on U-M’s success at launching startup businesses
The University of Michigan is among the nation's leaders in creating startup ventures based on university technology. To build on that success, U-M technology transfer officials have created the new Michigan Venture Center [venturecenter.umich.edu], a one-stop hub for entrepreneurs, investors and faculty inventors.
