Social costs of school success are highest for blacks, U-M study shows

African American and Native American teens who do well in school suffer from a higher "nerd penalty" than white, Asian, and Hispanic youth, according to a new analysis. "The negative social consequences of getting good grades were particularly pronounced for black and Native American students in high-achieving schools with small proportions of students similar to themselves," said University of Michigan developmental psychologist Thomas Fuller-Rowell, the lead author of the study. UMHS statement regarding use of animals in Survival Flight training

U-M has posted a statement on the use of animals in the training of U-M Health System Survival Flight staff. The statement is in response to criticism of the training by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. UPDATE - A USDA inspector visited the University of Michigan the week of Oct. 4, 2010 in response to the PETA complaint as well as to perform a full annual inspection. U-M Medical School creates joint institute with Peking University

The University of Michigan Medical School will establish a joint institute with the Peking University Health Science Center in a unique effort to promote research that can lead to breakthroughs in pulmonary, cardiovascular and liver diseases. The joint institute will feature collaborative research efforts, exchanges of faculty, medical residents, fellows and other researchers, and completion of large-scale clinical trials. “This is evidence of the University of Michigan Medical School’s intention to have a global impact on the way physicians are trained, and to be leaders in cutting-edge research that can solve the medical problems of our world,” says Joseph Kolars, senior associate dean for education and global initiatives.[Read more...]

U-M is leading university in research expenditures, NSF report

The University of Michigan ranks first in research and development spending among the nation’s public universities and colleges, according to the latest rankings from the U.S. National Science Foundation. The rankings for 2009, announced by the agency on Sept. 27, 2010, show that U-M moved up two positions, passing the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, to take the top slot among public universities. Student-built satellite scheduled for launch

A 6.5-pound satellite is scheduled to become the first stand-alone spacecraft built by Michigan students to go into orbit and perform a science mission. The Radio Aurora Explorer (RAX) is slated for launch Nov. 19, 2010 from Kodiak, Alaska. Its primary mission is to study how plasma instabilities in the highest layers of the atmosphere disrupt communication and navigation signals between Earth and orbiting satellites. [Read more...]

Homework wars: How can parents improve the odds of winning?

Children are more likely to do their homework if they see it as an investment, not a chore, according to new research at the University of Michigan. Most children in the United States say they expect to go to college, but there is frequently a gap between students' goals and their current behavior, according to the study conducted by U-M graduate student Mesmin Destin and Daphna Oyserman, a psychologist at the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR), School of Social Work, and Department of Psychology. The gap can be especially wide among low-income and African American students, the study says. [Read more...]

U-M iPhone App Grows from Student Project

An iPhone app conceived by two students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, built as a computer science class project, and purchased by the school's IT organization has made its public debut in the Apple iTunes store. Formerly named iWolverine, now called "University of Michigan," the app allows users to track buses in real time through the popular Magic Bus Web application, listen to the school's fight song, check dining hall menus, and search for buildings, among other features.
