Zell Lurie Institute awards student entrepreneurs more than $50,000 in grants

The Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business has announced the recipients of the Fall 2009 Eugene Applebaum Dare to Dream Grant Program, where students apply for funding to advance their innovative, high-potential business concepts toward launch. The 30 grant recipients submitted projects that range from a light sport aircraft design and manufacturing firm to an online fundraising platform for performers to a stationary bicycle that generates electricity. Ross Business School professor named top business thinker by Forbes

Corporate strategy sage C.K. Prahalad is the most influential management thinker in the world, according to the Thinkers 50, a biennial ranking of business gurus. Prahalad, who serves as the Paul and Ruth McCracken distinguished university professor of strategy at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, tops the list for the second time running. In addition, David Ulich, professor of business administration and director of the Human Resource Executive Program at Ross, is ranked 31st on the list. [Read more...]

U-M co-sponsors conference on plug-in electric vehicle industry

"The Business of Plugging In" is the inaugural conference on plug-in electric vehicles (PEV). The three-day meeting in Detroit brings together leaders from the automotive, utility and new technology industries with policy makers, financiers and researchers for interactions on business development, education and networking. Detroit area economy: Still dismal, but the worst is behind us

As bad as it's been for the Detroit area economy the past several years, 2009 will end up as the worst year ever for job losses, say University of Michigan economists. In their Economic Outlook for the Wayne-Oakland-Macomb Region, George Fulton and Donald Grimes of the U-M Institute for Research on Labor, Employment, and the Economy say the Detroit metro area will lose nearly 132,000 jobs this year—more than twice as many as last year. Next year will be better, although the region will still lose another 43,000 jobs. [Read more...]

Federal stimulus awards to U-M researchers top $100 million

University of Michigan scientists and engineers have been awarded more than 260 federal stimulus-package research grants to date, totaling $103.2 million. The funding includes 188 National Institutes of Health stimulus awards and 70 from the National Science Foundation. In addition, stimulus-package funding from the Energy Department will pay for a $19.5 million U-M research center to explore new materials for solar cells. [Read more...]

While traditional advertising is still the main driver of product sales, blogging and other new media are fast becoming predictors of market outcomes, say University of Michigan researchers. In a new study, "Marketing Activity, Blogging and Sales," Puneet Manchanda and Hiroshi Onishi of Michigan's Ross School of Business looked at the interaction of mainstream television advertising, consumer-generated media such as blogs and the sales of new products.
