About the Office of the Associate Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure (AVP-RCI)

Daniel E. Atkins, Associate Vice President, Research Cyberinfrastructure

The AVP-RCI office was established in September 2008 to advance existing and future cyberinfrastructure resources at the University. Cyberinfrastructure refers to integrated systems that include hardware, software, and human resources to support research requiring high-performance computing for modeling, simulation, prediction, and data mining; data management and visualization; virtual organizations; and educational enhancement.

The University wants to become a leader in computationally rich areas of research. Our mission is to catalyze partnerships to provision, to apply in transformative ways, and to continuously improve advanced cyberinfrastructure at the University of Michigan. Although our primary focus is on research, we also aspire to empower learning and societal engagement at a higher level of excellence, positive impact, scale, and global reach.

To that end, we are currently engaging in both provisioning (supply-side) and application (demand-side) activities that will coordinate with research, development, and educational activities at the University.

(A Report to the Community from the Office of the Associate Vice President for Research Cyberinfrastructure, May 21, 2009)

We welcome the input and participation of all interested members of the community. We are organizing formal events and activities to capture the needs and aspirations of those who would like to advance their use of computational resources, and we welcome informal opportunities to hear your interests. Several events and activities areunderway:

  • Town Hall meetings, held March 26 and March 31, 2009
  • Survey of computational resource requirements
  • Focus groups with sets of stakeholders
  • Interviews
